Florence packing essentials

Florence's historic centre is almost entirely cobblestone — comfortable, well-broken-in walking shoes are the single most important item you can pack. Blisters from the Uffizi to the Duomo are a genuine hazard for underprepared visitors.

Dress codes at churches and cathedrals (including the Duomo, Santa Croce, and Santa Maria Novella) require covered shoulders and knees. A lightweight scarf or cardigan tucked in your day bag solves this instantly. Museums have no dress code but are often cool even in summer (air-conditioned).

The ZTL restricted driving zone covers most of the historic centre — if you hire a car, use it only for Tuscany countryside day trips and park outside the ZTL. Fines range from €80 to €335.
